In Cayman, much of our home life unfolds on pool decks, patios and terraces. As inviting as these outdoor spaces are, the constant exposure to sun, salt and moisture takes its toll. Choosing the right decking and paving means finding materials that deliver on aesthetic appeal, can withstand the elements and are ideally also sustainable. Here are the top options for creating outdoor spaces that are both durable and beautiful.

PAVERS: TIMELESS STONE, VERSATILE CONCRETE & SLEEK PORCELAIN

Natural Stone

Natural stone pavers such as limestone or travertine have a classic, timeless appeal. Each piece is unique, with natural variations in colour, texture and pattern that create organic, flowing designs.

• Pros: Durable, comfortable underfoot, requires minimal processing and is environmentally friendly.

• Cons: Salt air can cause degradation of some stones; porous surfaces are prone to staining and water damage, so periodic sealing is typically required.

Concrete

Concrete pavers offer versatility, durability, and design flexibility. Available in countless shapes, sizes and colours – from contemporary to traditional – there are even options with aggregates such as shells or coral for added character.

• Pros: Does not warp, rot, or attract pests, and stays relatively cool underfoot; permeable versions reduce runoff and replenish groundwater.

• Cons: Can become slippery when wet and is susceptible to algae growth. Production is carbon-intensive, making it a less eco-friendly choice.

Porcelain

Porcelain pavers are the newer, low-maintenance, long-lasting alternative to stone or concrete. Made from kiln-fired clay, often mixed with recycled materials, they are non-porous and UV-resistant.

• Pros: Designed to mimic the look of wood, stone or concrete, porcelain pavers come in numerous sizes, finishes and non-slip textures. Porcelain is non-porous, so it does not stain and is also highly resistant to fading.

• Cons: Both materials and installation are more expensive than other options and porcelain carries a significant carbon footprint due to energy-intensive production and shipping.

DECKING: NATURE’S WARMTH, MODERN EASE & YACHT-INSPIRED LUXURY

Hardwoods

Real wood is hard to match in terms of visual appeal and aesthetics. Dense tropical hardwoods such as Ipe or Cumaru offer rich colours and grains, which weather to a silvery patina if left – or can be oiled and sanded to maintain their original tone.

• Pros: Naturally resistant to moisture, termites and rot; comfortable underfoot; can last 30–50 years.

• Cons: Require ongoing maintenance and can be slippery when wet. If not responsibly sourced from FSC-certified suppliers, hardwoods may contribute to deforestation.

Composite

Composite decking is the modern, synthetic alternative to timber. Made from natural fibres such as wood, sawdust, or bamboo combined with recycled plastic, it can be crafted to closely resemble hardwood.

• Pros: Resistant to termites, humidity and relentless Caribbean sun. Very low maintenance – no oiling or sanding required.

• Cons: Poorly engineered composites can run hot underfoot and, while they often contain recycled content, they are not biodegradable. Their sustainability lies in longevity, but they cannot be recycled at the end of life.

Marine-Grade Alternatives

Inspired by yacht design, these materials – from vinyl blends to cork composites and synthetic ‘teak’ – are engineered to withstand constant exposure to salt, sun and moisture. Increasingly popular for decks, docks and waterfront patios, they offer a sleek, contemporary look with minimal upkeep.

• Pros: Salt, sun and moisture resistant; non-slip and comfortable underfoot; require little more than a rinse to remain in mint condition.

• Cons: Lack the natural warmth of wood or stone. Typically, petroleum-based and non-biodegradable, so less appealing to eco-conscious homeowners.

A MATTER OF LIFESTYLE

As with all material choices, there is no single clear winner; rather, options exist to suit different budgets, styles and uses. The right one is the one that aligns best with your aesthetic, the amount of maintenance you are prepared to undertake and the environmental impact you are comfortable with.

In the Caribbean, where outdoor living is a way of life, the perfect surface is the one that allows your deck or patio to become an effortless extension of your home – beautiful, enduring and ready for a lifetime of barefoot moments.
