RL: Interior Design: What does design mean to you?

HW: Design is all about attention to detail, sophistication, and comfort. The interior space should be functional and aesthetically pleasing.

RL: How do objects, products, and furnishings shape the energy of a space?

HW: I’m not a fan of overcrowding a space. For example, with artwork, I would much rather have one large statement piece of art rather than three or four. One piece can ground a room and define the space.

RL: What are some of your earliest memories of design?

HW: My mom was a great influence on me growing up. Whether it was watching her get the house ready for a dinner party – the small tweaks around the house to make it more inviting – or after a move into a new home, how she would always make a space feel luxurious and comfortable.

RL: What led you to develop your current style?

HW: My imagination and creativity are reflected in designs that incorporate my client’s tastes and current trends. I want the spaces I design to be infused with stories and have a soul.

RL: What sparks joy in your home?

HW: Fresh flowers! There is something about having fresh flowers in my home that creates ‘joy’ and a sort of…calm, whether an arrangement from the local florist or, in a pinch, some greenery from the backyard in a pretty, clear vase.

RL: How does the TCI’s culture influence your design decisions?

HW: There is a dynamic energy that pulses through Turks and Caicos. This makes my job fun because I get to incorporate local makers, artists, and skilled tradespeople into our projects, making them feel like TCI.
